About Beth

Beth Tutt, MA, LPAT, ATR-BC

I’m a Licensed Professional Art Therapist and Board-Certified Art Therapist with 15 years of clinical experience working with adults, children, teens, and families.

My approach is relational and depth-oriented. I’m interested not only in what is happening, but in how you experience it, the patterns and relationships around it, and what may be difficult to understand or put into words.

For some clients, our sessions are entirely conversational. For others, art-making becomes an important part of the work. Many move between the two. I don't have a predetermined idea about which way therapy should happen.

How I think about therapy

Sometimes people come to therapy knowing precisely what they want help with. Other times, they know that something feels stuck, painful, confusing, or different and want a place to understand it more fully.

I’m often curious about what sits beneath the immediate problem: recurring patterns, relationships, emotional experience, and the gap that can exist between understanding something intellectually and experiencing it differently.

That doesn't mean every session needs to be intense or focused on the past. Therapy can also make room for what happened yesterday, what you're struggling with right now, or something you didn't expect to talk about at all.

A therapist and an art therapist

My training in art therapy brought psychotherapy and art-making together from the beginning. I earned my master's degree in art therapy from The George Washington University and am both a Licensed Professional Art Therapist in Washington, DC and a Board-Certified Art Therapist.

Some of my clients come specifically because they are looking for art therapy. Others come because they are looking for psychotherapy and never make art at all. Both belong in my practice.

Experience that shapes my work

Before moving into full-time private practice, I spent nearly a decade working as an art therapist in a pediatric hospital with children, teens, young adults, and families affected by serious illness and medical treatment.

I have also worked in community settings with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These experiences continue to inform my work, particularly when someone's experience is complicated, difficult to put into words, or requires me to think flexibly about how therapy happens.
